The gothic..
my idea of the gothic..a while ago, for me, the word gothic conjured up images in my minds eye of people with maybe:
- black hair
- nails
- clothes
- spikey hair, accessories like dog collars..y’know everything! Don’t ask why, the word just reminded me of this stuff ¬_¬
Anyways, thinking about it now, the gothic isn’t only an element present in culture and fashion, but is a huge part of literature e.g i believe that the way someone choses to dress can be seen as a form of expression, and i think the same can be said for the topics an artist or an author chooses to focus on in their work.
The many genres in literature, normally reflect the events of the period they were predominant in, and the gothic is no exception to that. Being more commonly identified by themes of death, supernatural activity, or for example the loss of a protagonists grip on reality, gothic literature was seen to realise the many fears societies held and still hold.. Sometimes, they’re written as a pass time…for Susan Hill writing the gothic novel “The Woman In Black” = fun times ^_^
BTW it’s a good read, i thought it took a while to get scary, and i frighten eaasily( i’ll write a blog on it when i see the play) “they” (whoever they is) always say the book’s better than the play and i kinda wanna know how the play write took soooo much narrative and turned it into a play..
